HKAF Distinguished Cultural Leader Series (VI) Speaker: Yeh Wen-wen (Executive Director of Cloud Gate Culture and Arts Foundation)

Festival PLUS is delighted to present Ms Yeh Wen-wen, Executive Director of Cloud Gate Culture and Arts Foundation since 2003, as our special speaker in the sixth edition of the HKAF Distinguished Cultural Leader Series. Yeh joined Cloud Gate in 1991 as Company Manager and was promoted to the post of General Manager in 1998. With a career spanning over three decades, Yeh has been working side-by-side with dance master Lin Hwai-min as one of the architects building the company's success and status as one of Taiwan's most significant cultural organisations and one of the world's most revered dance ensembles. Moderator Ms Flora Yu, Development Director of the Hong Kong Arts Festival, will explore with Yeh, from arts administration angles,  the challenges, success, developments and transformations experienced by Cloud Gate over the years.

YEH Wen-wen (Executive Director, Cloud Gate Culture and Arts Foundation)

One of the most experienced and senior performing arts veteran in Taiwan, Ms. Yeh majored in acting in Taiwan and received a MFA degree in Performing Arts Management in Brooklyn College, City University of New York.

Working side-by-side with maestro Lin Hwai-min since 1983 and joined Cloud Gate in 1991 as Company Manager and promoted as General Manager in 1998. Since 2003, she has served as the Executive Director working together with 120 team members of Could Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan, Cloud Gate 2, Cloud Gate Theater, and Cloud Gate Foundation to present more than 200 performances and activities annually in Taiwan and overseas.

In 2008, Cloud Gate’s warehouse studio was destroyed in a blaze. Yeh was appointed to take the lead to sign a B.O.T. contract with the New Taipei City government for a 40-year operating right to use the public land, on condition that Cloud Gate provided its own funds for building and running the theater on the site. In 2015, Cloud Gate moved to new home, Cloud Gate Theater, in Tamsuiand has presented performances and activities by the two home-based companies and visiting artists from Taiwan and abroad.

In 2017, Cloud Gate Theater won the first prize of the prestigious Far Eastern Architectural Design Award.
